You might be trying to decide whether it’s better to take lessons with a private teacher or go to one of the many language schools in Prague (or do both). There are several factors you need to consider when making your choice. The difference is the level of attention you’ll receive from a teacher at a language school and style of lessons.

This guide will help you understand what to expect at a language school.

How Many Language Schools Are There in Prague?

There are lots of language schools in Prague. Some of the most well known ones include Wall Street English, AKCENT International House and Berlitz.

Like with anything in life, you should consider your options carefully and do your research before committing to a specific one. Read each school’s website, find out what is covered in each course, and speak to the course director if you can. If you’re looking to take an exam, make sure they specialise in preparing people for it. Or, perhaps even better would be to ask friends which schools they’ve been to. See what they’ve liked and disliked about the school they’ve visited. Their opinion may be more trustworthy than a review on a website from someone you don’t know. Remember, however, that your friends and you can have different levels of language proficiency and different learning goals. These should definitely be taken into account when choosing a language school.

What are Lessons at a Language School Like?

Many language schools, particularly global brands, such as Berlitz, have their own set teaching methods and plan lessons around these. As you’re in a group, your teacher will be aiming to help you all progress at an even level, so they get the best overall feedback at the end of the course. If you don’t understand something, but the rest of the class does, then you might find them moving on without you.

A private teacher, though, is there just to teach you. Teachers also have their own preferred methods, but good ones will adapt to suit your style of learning. They are there to answer every question you have and explain anything you don’t get. A private teacher relies on you seeing progress and coming back for more lessons, so it’s in their best interest to do the best to help you learn.

How Much Do Language Schools Cost?

Each school will have their own lesson costs and pricing structure. A common feature in the language schools in Prague is to quote a price per 45 minutes and make you double up for 90-minute lessons. What’s more, many make you pay upfront for a block of lessons. While this does help make you more committed to learning, and less likely to cancel a lesson, it’s not ideal if you find you’re not getting much out of lessons or you don’t have the cash available to pay upfront.

Private teachers are cheaper, they can teach for 1 hour, or 90 minutes, depending on your preference, and will often reward you with a discount if you’re happy to pay for a block of lessons upfront. And, if you think about the fact that teachers will often travel to your house or somewhere convenient for you, you’re saving yourself extra on travel costs.

What to Consider When Deciding How to Learn?

Group classes at a language school are the best option for a beginner. Everyone needs to learn the same basic skills when they start learning a new language. Grammar, pronunciation, and basic vocabulary can all be well taught in groups and being around other learners can be a great encouragement – after all, you’re at the most risk of quitting at the beginning.

If you’re preparing for an exam, or if you are a businessman looking to improve your presentation skills, then you need the individual attention of private lessons. Private teachers can quickly assess your strengths and weaknesses, and create a lesson plan to help you develop the skills you’re most interested in improving.
