If you’ve already checked out one of the other language exchange events we covered in Vienna and decided those aren’t for you, the city luckily has a few other options to offer. Unfortunately, finding reliable English practice events might still be a struggle but, if German practice is what you’re after, then SprachCafé might be your next favourite destination.
While this is not an event series organised by any Meetup group, we felt it was more than fitting to add to our list of recommended language practice meeting in Vienna.
SprachCafé is a language practice project undertaken and organised by Agenda Alsergrund. This is a local community organisation dedicated to improving cooperation and various positive causes in Viennese neighbourhoods. SprachCafé is only one part of their agenda and a rather recent addition – the first event took place in August 2016 but hopefully they’ll continue for a while.
This series was first created to provide a casual and relaxed environment where participants can practice German and as an alternative to actual classes.
SprachCafé takes place on the ground floor of the Café der VHS Alsergrund, located at 8 Galileigasse. The event takes place outside in the garden when the weather is nice.
VHS (Volkshochschulen) is a government-funded organisation which offers the local residents courses in various topics, including languages.
These events take place every other Thursday between 5pm and 7pm. There is no previous registration necessary and walk-ins with friends are more than welcome.
You can keep an eye on when the next one is happening at the upcoming events calendar on the Agenda Alsergrund’s website.
This is a fantastic way of meeting new people and practicing German in a laidback environment, not to mention that participation is free. Organised by passionate activists who are looking to bring their local community closer together, you might even find yourself inspired to take part in the other projects organised by the group.
