Although Albanian, or shqip, belongs to the Indo-European language tree, it has no known relatives. Thus, it forms a language family all by itself.
Albanian originates from Southeast Europe where it has around 5 million speakers. However, since there are large Albanian communities all over the world, the actual number of speakers is much higher.
Albanian is actually a collection of many different dialects. In broad terms, these are divided into the Tosk and Gheg groups, with standardised Albanian belonging in the Tosk group.
Before Albanian was demonstrated to be Indo-European, it was thought to be belong to either the Germanic or Balto-Slavic group and be related to Greek, Latin, or Armenian.
