Here are some interesting facts about Latvian

Latvian, or latviešu valoda, wasn’t always called that. Latvian was previously called “Lettish”.

Latvian is most closely related to its neighbour Lithuanian, although the two languages are not mutually intelligible. Latvian shares almost nothing with its northern neighbour – Estonian.

Most male names in Latvian end in either -s or -š, so that they can be declined. Very few, mostly foreign, exceptions remain.

Although Latvian has been heavily influenced by German, it retains traits from the Proto-Indo-European language from which it evolved. This makes Latvian rather unique and of interest to linguists and translators.
